Film Classification

The Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board ("NSUARB" or "Board") is the final stage in the appeal process respecting the classification of films under the Theatres and Amusements Act. These adjudicative functions were assigned to the Board in April 2000. Previously, they had been performed from 1995 to 2000 by the former Board of the Alcohol and Gaming Authority (AGA).

Films for distribution in Nova Scotia must be classified by the AGA (a Division of the Department of Environment and Labour). All advertising for the films must reflect the ratings assigned by AGA film classification officials. Film distributors who are dissatisfied with the rating assigned to a film may appeal the decision of the film classifier(s) to the Board.

After appellants notify the AGA that they wish to appeal the classification, the Clerk of the Board is contacted and arrangements are made for the Board to view the film in question. The Board has the authority to uphold, overturn, and/or vary the decision of the film classifier(s).

The Theatres and Amusements Act and the Theatres and Amusements Regulations can be accessed through the "Statutes" and "Rules and Regulations" buttons located on the top of the screen.

Also, decisions of the Board can be accessed through the "Decisions" button located on the top of this screen.
